The stations around the bay
Each sees a different slice of the wind.
Use them together and note each one’s age.
- Point Atkinson sits on the Lighthouse Park headland at the entrance.
- The Entrance to English Bay buoy is in open water, west of the bay.
- Halibut Bank is out in the Strait, about 18 NM west of Point Atkinson.
- Jericho Sailing Centre reports from the south shore.

The afternoon pattern
Sea breezes can build on clear days, but the wider weather decides.
A sunny afternoon is no guarantee of wind. Read the marine forecast for the pattern, then watch the stations to see whether the day is following it.
Watch it fill in
Leave when the stations show the breeze, not when the forecast says.
On a light-forecast day, the wind can arrive well before or long after the model says. The stations show it as it happens.

Exposure
A quiet shore reading can sit beside a windy entrance.
Lighthouse Park’s headland and its forest throw a lee to the east in westerlies; the buoy sees open water. Compare timestamps as well as speeds, and don’t judge the whole bay from Jericho alone: the south shore is often lighter than the entrance.
Leaving the harbour
First Narrows runs up to about 4 kn on a big tide.
Check the slack times before you leave or return through the Lions Gate.
